TIPS FOR FIRST-TIME VISITORS

LANGUAGE

Arabic is the official language, however, English is widely understood and spoken. The event’s printed materials will include both languages, plus other translation services can be provided.

CURRENCY & TIME

The official currency used is the UAE dirham (Dh), and although tipping is not expected, it is a common practice to do so. Dubai operates on Gulf Standard Time (GST), which is GMT +4.

DRESS

Dubai is tolerant and cosmopolitan, however, Islam is a way of life in the city. Therefore, tourists should adopt a certain level of cultural and religious sensitivity. Conservative dress is encouraged.

ELECTRICITY

Normal three-pin 134 amp British-style plugs are used, operating on 220/240 volts. Although adapters are usually in hotels, you may want to purchase one before you arrive.

WEATHER

The line of the Tropic of Cancer crosses through the UAE, causing the weather in Dubai to be hot and sunny. Near coastal areas humidity can average between 50% and 60%.

PHOTOGRAPHY

Airports, docks, telecommunication equipment, government buildings, military and industrial installations should not be photographed. Please observe the “no photography” signs.

ATTRACTIONS

Go to the top of the world’s tallest building, ski down snowy mountains inside or skydive above a man-made island. GRLC encourages you to make the most of your trip to Dubai.

Dubai’s malls have evolved into miniature leisure and entertainment destinations, while the souks are an immersive experience of sights, sounds and smells.

ALCOHOL

Alcohol is widely available at bars, restaurants, hotels and leisure clubs. You cannot purchase alcohol from a supermarket. It is against the law to walk in the street drinking alcohol or to be intoxicated in a public place.

WORK DAYS AND WEEKENDS

Friday is the holy day of rest. Weekends are Friday and Saturday.
